4 Habits of Highly Successful Content Creators

By Taryn Anderson Jun 6, 2019
Don’t get left behind! In a survey by the Content Marketing Institute, 91% of business-to-business professionals said they use content marketing as part of their strategy.

Content marketing has been defined as “a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience.” Content marketing is something you want in your marketing arsenal, as it can drive customer action—action that profits your brand and your business.

But beware: not all content is valuable, high quality, or good! And even if it is, there is always room for improvement.

Want your content to compel and be the best it can possibly be? Below are the four habits the most successful content creators share.

  • Keep up. If you want to create content that resonates with your target audience, you have to know what is happening with your industry and its consumers. The news and trends of today can give you great context for understanding your audience’s mindset, wants, and needs.

  • Take advantage of networking opportunities. You can create content, sure, but how do you guarantee that it doesn’t fade into oblivion? As you spend time working on your own campaigns, stay in touch with those in your industry, and venture out to meet new people. You can even contribute to the creation of their content. This can create good karma, but ultimately, networking is also how you can get your own content promoted and shared.

  • Study up. So how do you get to know your audience? Is it just guesswork and a lot of trial and error? There are more than a few practical and actionable methods that will help you know customers on a personal level. These include partaking in market research, applying user data, creating consumer profiles, and directly engaging with clients. Study your audience, learn what they’re thinking about, and let this information guide the content you create.

  • Pay attention to trends in the digital landscape. You don’t have to take notice of just your competitors—all content is free game for studying. Watch how different pieces of content on various platforms perform. What works? What doesn’t? Do certain messages trend better on certain social media platforms? What leads to more sales—a picture or text? When you can spot what resonates, your ability to create equally effective material will improve dramatically.
